one thing you should stop doing when your kids are reading

Are you quick to correct your child when she is stuck reading a word? We all have this impulse to step in and help.

When your child is struggling to read a word, pause for 5 seconds…..and give them a moment to work it out on their own.  I call this “think time.”  You’ll find that it helps your child, and you!

One last thing: When your child is having a tough time figuring out a "sight word" (words they can not sound out — the, said), you can step in and tell her the word. Point out that it’s a sight word and is “kind of tricky.”  This will help her recall it next time.

Here’s a post about sight words and why they’re important for your child to learn.
